Green for IT : l’essor des éco-TIC

In France, 2008, the use of computer equipment, telecoms and electronics represented 7.3% of the whole general public electric consumption, as compared to 6.2% in 2005. Meanwhile, the number of active equipments to access ICTs rose by 40%, and the number of subscriptions for high-speed systems more than doubled, coming up to 17 millions by the end of 2008 – according to the results of a survey launched by several industrial federations (Alliance TICS, the French federation of telecoms and la FIEEC).

Reducing the impact of TICs is, therefore, a major ecological and economical issue. Inovallée’s companies are willing to act on this and are now developing activities based on:

  • Ecological computing: Xalto with its green data, Tiempo with its economical asynchronous chips, Eaton with its eco-based material, APC by Schneider and its innovative data centers cooling systems, and Sun Microsystems with its OS that can reduce up to 60% of energetic expanses, Capgemini with its Green IT outsourcing contracts.
  • Full Web, Saas and could computing: Cotranet and Genwyse for EDM systems, 24-7 for CRM, Aatlantide with its online management system of medical claim forms like those of VITALE (the French healthcare system)
  • Dematerialization: Informatique Center with its virtual servers and data storage bays
  • Research: INRIA works on green networking, green computing, green programming and green storage, Orange Labs works on cloud computing, Thales works on multi-core development and distributed calculation…
